If Derek had been a god in Norse mythology or a Viking his name might have been Derek the destroyer or Derek the slayer, as it is he is not a Viking but he has proven himself time and time again to slay, destroy, get rid of and exterminate the vermin from our house.
You all know what our place looks like, built in 1950s shoddy 1990 add ons. 100m from open grass land and 300m from a large creek. All a perfect breeding grounds for mice and their slightly larger more revolting cousins -rats.
The last 2 Sunday nights/early Monday mornings Derek has not rested til the scoundrels have been caught. This mornings escapades saw one very large mouse - about the size of my fist be trapped and caught in our wardrobe. I don't think I will ever be able to get the image of the torchlight illuminating a large mouse sitting in my hanging drawers on top of my tshirts out of my mind. I may well have nightmares about rats coming and eating my face while I sleep or coming to claim our baby to be their own rat prince.
I will sleep better with the determined unflappable destroyer sleeping by my side.
He let me sleep on the couch when we vacated our room, and have the only doona, and he did not complain. Perfect Viking gentleman, rescuing a damsel in distress.
He didn't complain too much about the 40+ pairs of shoes he had to remove from my cupboard to get to the mouse who had dropped out of the tshirts and into the footwear department.
I just hope that the vermin are gone now, annihilated. And that we - me and the destroyer get some good, nightmare free sleep.
No more Mice, I warn you.

I am wondering if Derek the mouse slayer would like to visit our place and slay some of our vermin? They are in the roof at present and haven't come inside so far but they sound really big and I think they may be trying to build a way into the house. ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
