I took sebastian to the shops tonight to spend some of his birthday money and was lured into some shops promising cheap clothes. I um-ed and ahh-ed and left a very soft stripes jersey batwing top on the rack. I got home and was reminded by a friend on Facebook about the clothes factory collapse in Bangladesh last year with over a thousand women and children being killed. And another post about sustainable fashion from a fabric store I subscribe to. In yet another shop I was toying with the purchase of some shimmery eyeshadow only to see it's chief ingredient is mica which is almost solely mined by children in India who are being exploited in terrible terrible conditions. Is a cheap tshirt or some shimmery powder worth that? I don't think we take to much time to think about where our clothes or makeup comes from and I doubt we would be very satisfied if we knew the truth.
I know it's incredibly hard to ever buy something that hasn't exploited someone along the line but I'm going to try to not make it me. I have so many tshirts I have so many shoes. I have plenty of makeup. I need none of these things.
Someone else will buy the stripes batwing top. Those women have already been treated badly. But for those in the future I'm going to do my part.
Join me. Don't get sucked into cheap disposable fashion.
And remind me if I do.
Thus endth the rant.

The runner
I have one of those kids that runs. Away. He loves to run. He thinks it's fun and funny. It's not good, especially at school. He takes off every afternoon and runs down down the ramp and around the corner at school. It's driving me crazy. He looks and giggles then runs like the wind giggling all the way killing himself laughing until I catch him. It's a catch 22 literally. If I don't chase him he will get lost or squashed when I do chase him he thinks it's great and such a fun game. Ugh. Those leashes. He needs to be in the stroller

But then this happens

Oh for a contained playground with fences everywhere. Really school is the worst. I get it. It's pretty boring. And it's twice a day 5 days a week.

But it's going to be life for a long while

Back at school
The dreaded day is here day one. Back at school. I dreaded it as much as the kids. I like holidays and hanging out and having them here and not having to keep to a schedule. Especially not having to get them out the door at 820.
But we made it today. What was even more delightful was that it was cross country today. There were moans and groans and whinging and complaining and secretly, inwardly I was too. It's the worst. It was hot. The grass was long and seedy. It was a long way.
For the last few years seb has stopped just plum given up. Refused to go on anymore and come dead last or he has not realised it was a race and that he had to try to win or in the very least finish the course.
But today with a big pep talk from me on the way and some rockin Ben pakula. They did it. They completed the course, ran the race, finished and not last.!! That was always my place. I was bursting with pride. Not cause they won or did brilliantly. But because they tried even when they didn't feel like it. They sucked it up and got on with it. Good on them.
And there was a coffee cart there for me. ( not just for me. But there was a coffee that had my name on it )
I was planning a reward this afternoon but someone's behaviour was so diabolical I ended up throwing 9 Easter eggs in the bin. Maybe a reward tomorrow.

Walking back from school
The lone red stroller.
I don't consider myself a particularly air headed person but now I'm calling my own opinion into question. Earlier this week I dropped the kids at school and drove home, spent the day at home then went back in the afternoon an picked them up, on my cruise around the usual parking spots I saw this.

A red pram very similar to mine sitting off to the side of the road. Hmmmm I thought that's odd that looks just like my pram. Couldn't be my pram I wouldn't leave it on the road, drove on to find a parking space. When I got out of the car and picked T up to put in the pram I threw the boot open only to find... No pram... It was my pram by the side of the road, right where I had left it and forgotten to pick it up and put it in the boot that morning. I had put T in the car and driven off! Airhead.
So I swung back around and sheepishly put the pram into the car, no one was there I thought I had gotten away with it.
Til the next day when we were walking up to school a dad said to me "oh that was your pram, I got it off the road and left it there I hoped you might come back for it." SPRUNG!!!
I will now be known at school as the airhead who forgets her pram.

Is it any wonder this boy broke his arm
Found him like this today, turned my back for a moment

He has the opening and shutting string from the blinds and is holding it swinging down onto the lounge. Seriously! It's the short single cord not the long dangly tangly one. Even still I was not happy with this activity and there the cords up on top of the bookshelf. I'm sure he is trying to figure out how to climb up and get them.

Be brave and ... Spray
Today was shave for a cure day at school which meant coloured hair spray and loads of it. I nearly passed out walking into the undercover areas at school this morning for hairspray fumes - it was worse than the pe change room in year 8. (Impulse spray fumes of death)

Here's Elliot having his colour consultation

Safety first

Hmmm not that much colour for a gold coin

Sebastian joined in too

He at least smelled nice, weirdly his hairspray smelled exactly the same as his baby clothes washing detergent. It was nice and familiar and weird to be cuddling a nearly eight year old hulk of a boy instead of a snuggly baby.
