Happy Easter

You know its not all aboUt bunnies mum?
Yep, I did know that. Far more gruesome when a man hung on a cross for us hopeless sinners.

Earlier that day...

On a day of 30 degrees my son wore a full 100% polyester suit to school. All. Day.
I sent some other clothes with him for when "he got so hot he might pass out" but that child is nothing if not committed to a full day of dressing up and staying in character.

On the way home we found this under the bridge, some slightly more creative graffiti than the usual tags.

So we did some gangnam style in front of it.

Elliot did walk most of the way home with one shoe on.

A house divided against itself

A house divided against itself cannot stand. Again with the proverbs? (Bible scholars I realise this is a saying of Jesus but believe it is a proverb in common usage- that's what I'm talking about today.)
Here are the two ends of our house yesterday.

aw, story time with daddy

And what - sebastian is a hive of industry?

He was removed from story time and anything fun. He chose not to be a part of the house. The house that recognises respect and care for each other, he had chosen to belong to the house of Smartypantsness and whingitis.
You can't belong to two masters. Chose one and not the other.
He chose....poorly.
So he wrote out 45 times " I will not speak back to mummy again" ( on the spur of the moment I failed to come up with a longer sentence.) it started out as 10 times but then escalated quite quickly to 45 as the smart mouthing kept up and the boy tested my metal to see what I was made of. His gamble failed, the house doesn't lose. The house won't give in to terrorists.
The punishment was set. He was to sit and finished - he had 90 minutes to do so. There were angry outbursts, " this writing is a piece of junk, I'm going to break this pencil in two with my bare hands, etc etc the slew of angry words flew, but he gained control, he sat and gave in, he wrote the words, he learned a lesson.
Post punishment he was very affectionate and sweet, ah repentance it's a beautiful thing.
I am glad of Pinterest who gave me the idea of the lines, and Louise who's wisdom reminds me that the punishment needs to fit the crime.
Derek and I have been dreaming up more creative punishments for our feisty nearly seven year old for when he tests the boundaries next. My guess is he is exhausted from this last battle of wills, he has learnt it does not pay to rude to his mother, he has learned some self control. His handwriting has really improved!
He wants to be a part of the other end of the house the one that gets to hear Peter Pan in awesome daddy accents.

Biting the hand that feeds you.

I realise this pithy little proverb is more about animals than people but it really is the way to sum up my last week. Tristan got two teeth - bottom teeth. He has been using them. I am not kidding when I say feeding that boy is like playing Russian roulette. I am NOT enjoying myself. Why why why do all my children bite me. I feed them so often, I am happy to feed them whenever they are hungry, I think I am a good supplier so, why why why do they insist on biting me. Every.single.one.

I need to remember this hard job is worthwhile in the end, but I am filled with dread many times a day as I head into a darkened room, warn the other children if they come near me I will release punishments upon them both lengthy as they are unpleasant and sit down holding my breath, shoulders tensed waiting for the inevitable.
I hope this settles down soon, or else there may be strike action*

* this is a passive aggressive move which I never intend on following thru - it is a shallow threat to somewhat make myself feel better and intimidate my 6 month old son who cannot read nor use the interweb into improving his feeding behaviours.

12 months and counting

There has been something to peer at over the front gate for twelve months now. From wrecking balls, to earthmovers, concrete pumpers, delivery vans, cranes, you name it and its probably been in my street, making me cross, disturbing my peace and quiet. This week they have dug up the road, for what - who knows but there have been concrete cutters, diggers with many different attachments, men with stop/slow signs and trucks galore. It's truly not clear what they are doing. But...

Elliot and carnaby have spent many a moment watching thru and over the gate.

Doesn't that digger look tropical with all our palm trees in the way, some what softens the brutality that is that noisy machine.

I cannot wait for them to be done. I was done 11 months and 3 weeks ago. Oh wait... They knocked down two more houses on our street. Yippee more construction.

A piece of cardboard

A few boys on adventure in a car made of cushions and a strip of cardboard. I love how sebastian has made himself the designated driver as the oldest.

Golden days

After a false start the day before - bags packed ready to go but 39 degree temps waylaid us. We set off to the Gold Coast to visit Nerida and her family on holidays.

everytime i go to the gc i forget how massive the high rises are! Bigger than in Brisbane I'm sure.

What a lovely day - swimming slides fountains food cousins sisters and lots of fun.

Climbing trees- the life guard then told them climbing trees was not allowed - bah humbug!

Seb went on the giant slide twice - once with Nerida and once with Daniel, not sure who liked it most.

More slides and swimming then off to the new hotel

In the nick of time! Look at that weather that rolled in! Time for a cup of tea a huge bath for all the lane grand kiddos then delicious ravioli for dinner - sad goodbyes and boys asleep before we hit the m1.
I wish we lived closer and these golden days didn't happen so rarely.
A much needed family time injection

A world of crazy

So this afternoon marks the beginning

Look at all those people and children and soccer balls flying!!! It was first training this afternoon.

Shin pads were put on

Hats were put on

Soccer balls were kicked.
THEN IT POURED!!!

Sebastian said it was the most fun ever. Yay for under 7s

A little moment

A cup of tea, a fixed plate, some purée, a bill for 5c that needed to be payed. The best rum and raisin chocolate - a reward for doing the groceries. Dad I'd share it with you if you weren't in India and were here, actually no

I'd buy you your own block and we could sit next to each other eating grown up chocolate and not having to share.

Boring

Gosh there can be some boring ways to spend money. Replacing 4 tyres on a car is definitely one of those ways, dull, dull dull but necessary. So this is either a $400 cup of hot chocolate or the safest hour and a half I've spent recently.

Tristan was very obliging. The tyre guy called him a girl. He didn't get offended. He's good like that. But seriously, he's all in boys clothes.

My brother, my hero

About a week ago we were hanging around at the jungle gym after school ( just as I wrote that down I realised I'd never written jungle gym down before and actually went to write jungle jim like its someone's name, yep that's right I've always thought it was named after someone- maybe the guy who invented it? ) anywho I digressed...
We were are the jungle jim and two older boys were digging in the sandpit and telling Elliot he was a baby and wasn't allowed there and they didn't want him in their game etc etc. I watched slightly bemused waiting to see how this situation might unfold. Usually when we talk about these scenarios Elliot is quick to fire off "I'll just kick them in the nuts or punch them." He doesn't, however and his biting days are well behind him.
The big boys were being mean. What was Elliot going to do? I waited and watched to see if he would indeed come thru on his promises and if I would need to be explaining to several mothers from school that their boys were now male eunuchs thanks to a week aimed croc of a four year old.
Elliot had not a chance to react because faster than a speeding bullet, his big brother stepped in

Hey ! He said - hands on hips - dont you talk to my brother like that. He's ok - he can play here if he wants to, leave him alone.

my heart did a little dance. the kind where joy and lightness flood over you and you have a glimpse of the man your little boy might be and I was proud. proud that he is the kind of boy who will stand up for his little brother and protect him - even in front of his friends. I could be proud of his achievements but I'd much rather hold this one close in my heart as a peek to the future of the character we are trying to grow in that boy.

Now don't get me wrong Elliot could have taken those boys on. He is feisty enough to do it. And later that night they both punched each other in the nuts- ahhh brotherly love.

Maybe sweetness?

Elliot is having trouble listening, he alternates between super polite and sweet thoughtful loveliness to a raging beast and child who puts things on a babies face and jumps into cots. I need to find... I was going to say a happy medium but really I want all sweetness and no beast, but that's not real life is it? Some days I'm sure if he had a blog I would be described as the beast.

Red stripes a go go.

I put Tristan in this red suit for the first time today and I remembered two other sweeties who have donned the jailbird attire.
