The truth about dogs and chickens

This is a brutally honest post about how chickens and our dogs can't get along.
Today marks a sad/ happy day in our household, depending on who you ask.
I'd like to preface this by saying also that this was my suggestion and idea.
I am fed up with the chickens. And the dog. We have had her for 9 years so there is no getting rid of her.
Here are some stark realities of what happens when you have a dog who is a food scavenger.

Chickens escape the coop every night and roost on your top step. Pooing everywhere

Chickens come onto your back deck, poo everywhere including on your chairs and tables
Chickens stand outside door at 530 in the morning bawking to be fed. I'm sure they are waking Elliot up too.

Our dog who is a carnivore took off after a chicken with a carrot peeling in her beak and grabbed her by the tail and shook the chicken til she let go of the carrot peeling! Surely it's only a matter of time before carnaby decides they must go.

Chickens scratch out dirt from garden beds no matter how many times you sweep it back in.

Here is a wily chicken using one of the many escape routes carnaby has constructed.
The boys are devastated but I have a feeling that once they are gone they aren't really going to talk about it much. They are nice birds but they don't have a personality you can really warm to, like a dog. And at least dogs poo in one place, carnaby would never poo on the outside table and chairs.

One last thing to mention is that Carnaby has been disgusting ever since we got them, she rolls in their sloppiest of poos and constantly stinks,

So this chicken experiment is over, it was nice while it lasted and maybe someday we will do it again, with less cocky chickens, bantams maybe, quiet little fluffy bantams. Not loud abrasive assertive isa browns.

So I did have a great idea planned to just ship the chickens off and cook 2 chicken pies for dinner tonight and see if anyone noticed, but I think the funniness of the little joke may have been lost on my sons, so we will put them in a box and drive them up to our friends house this afternoon where they will be put into her coop on her acreage tonight. Tomorrow they will wake up and have forgotten they ever lived here, and will assume that they have always been there. Pea brains.

  2. So not a fan of chickens. Mike will be pleased, now he can tell me that we should not get chickens. Amelie will be glad you didn't eat them she was quite concerned when a lady at church here ate the rooster they had from christmas.
